Wilmette

Shady roads winding through a mix of distinctive commercial districts and suburban residential havens are all part of the charm of Wilmette.

Welcome to Winnetka

A one-of-a-kind lakeside gem where diversity and an energizing lifestyle pair perfectly with North Shore refinement

Signature green street lanterns and arbored, shady roads winding through a mix of distinctive commercial districts and suburban residential havens are all part of the charm of Wilmette. The village’s central location makes all the difference here, with an expansive combination of facets that include beach, woodlands, and a bustling population.

Just south of Winnetka and with convenient intersections of I-94 and Skokie Road within its western boundaries, Wilmette has long been an enticing beacon along the Lake Michigan North Shore. Its history is unique in that the modern-day village is the product of blending two older communities in 1926: Wilmette and Gross Point. Now, the area is known for its diverse population and eclectic, open style.

A mixture of newer lakefront condos and historic properties in tandem with lavish homes set away in quiet neighborhoods keeps the village of Wilmette welcoming and exciting. Brick colonials in the heart of town and sweeping, Greek Revival manors with private drives contribute to the feeling of upscale elegance that radiates out of Wilmette.

Local Lifestyle

The commercial districts of Wilmette are sprinkled throughout the village, meaning that residents are never far from opportunities for shopping and dining. Tons of public park spaces and access to the lake means that outdoor enthusiasts and families never run out of recreation options.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

One of the major retail attractions of Wilmette is the historic waterfront Plaza del Lago. Not only is this radiant outdoor center packed with local shops and restaurants, but it’s also a testament to the glamorous Spanish architecture that helped define the 1920s. Here, eateries like Convito Cafe & Market exude old-world, European classiness. This restaurant, in particular, boasts authentic Italian and French cuisine and has been serving up excellence for over 20 years. Minutes away along Wilmette Avenue is the downtown district, along with several other incredible local eats, such as Napolita. This chic favorite pairs gourmet, Neapolitan pizzas with a fabulous selection of wines, Italian desserts, and even pasta imported right from Napoli.

Across the street and tucked between trendy shops like exhibit boutique, Sophia Steak is the classic neighborhood steakhouse and a go-to for prime cuts and fresh seafood. Breakfast fanatics will want to spend every weekend brunch at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House. Apple pancakes and thick, perfectly seared bacon are among some of the few specialties here that keep locals coming back for more.

Things to Do

Green spaces, a sandy lake beach, and sailing all come together at Gillson Park, which features over 60 sprawling acres of lakefront property. Lighted tennis courts, fitness courses, play areas, picnic spots, a dog beach, and boat ramps top off the phenomenal amenities at Gillson Park, which also hosts summer outdoor theater at its pavilion, the Wallace Bowl.

Wilmette’s yacht club — the Wilmette Harbor / Sheridan Shore Yacht Club — is also based out of Gillson Park. Before a day out on the waters or enjoying the sunshine on the sand, residents can hit up the Farmers Market, also known as the French Market. Running roughly between April and October on Saturday mornings, the market features local creators, vendors, farmers, shops, and artisans among its array of goods for sale.

Schools

Wilmette is home to a number of excellent schools. Its public schools are the largest feeder school for students heading into New Trier Schools, one of the state's highest-ranked high schools. Top educational opportunities include:

  • Loyola Academy, 9-12, highly rated private Catholic school ranked #5 in the state
  • Avoca/Marie Murphy School, K-4, 5-8 respectively
  • Central Elementary School, K-4, highly rated public elementary school
  • Wilmette Junior High School, 7-8, highly rated public middle school
